The Shop Dog Diaries: Managing the Orders Team with Jinora

We, the Shop Dogs of Parnassus Books are historically a rough and tumble bunch. We run, play, sniff books, and sit on boxes to assist Peter while he receives books in the back room. Last year, a shop dog like we’ve never seen before came into our group. Her name is Jinora and she’s a standard poodle. She’s tall, taller than Barnabus, Nemo, Miller, Roxy, and Winnnie. She’s more graceful than Ripley.  I guess what we’re saying is that if there were a cover model for all shop dogs, it could be Jinora. But she’s not just a pretty face. She knows how to get things done. 

We love it when humans come into the store to shop for books. We also love it when readers come in to pick up a book they pre-ordered or one Nemo told them about on the Laydown Diaries. We know that sometimes our book friends live in other cities. For these friends, we have Jinora’s team of online orders people.

Thanks friends! Jinora here. I adore books, shipping boxes, packing tape, labels, and especially crinkle paper. My mom Sydney manages the e-commerce team for the bookstore. The E means everybody who likes to read can buy a book from Parnassus whether they live near our store or not. We ship worldwide! 

Nemo’s mom, Ann Patchett, works at our bookstore telling people about great books, but she also writes some of the books in our store. She’s an author! We love Nemo’s mom and so do book people all over the United States and the world. Readers love when she puts her name in a book she wrote with pens from our office.  We like to put our paws on the books sometimes or sniff them, but that’s different. When Nemo’s mom writes her name in a book, we make sure it gets to the person who wants to read it. Recently my team shipped so many copies of Ann’s new book with the horse on the cover.

I have a bunch of friends who work for me besides my mom – Rachel, Sissy, Michelle, Jake, Lauren, and Paige. They sit at desks and I run around and tell them what a bark-tastic job they’re doing printing order slips, putting books from the store in boxes with bookmarks, crinkle paper, and stickers. Then it’s time for the parade of books to travel outside the store to readers.
