Our Not-Quite-Ready-for-the-Shop Dogs

Hello. It’s me, Sparky. (That’s my Halloween costume. I was a pirate. Arrrf, matey.) I love this time of year, because things are super-busy at Parnassus Books. Visitors are coming in and out all the time, and the shop people are staffing up to help everyone get what they need for the upcoming holidays. We’ve got all hands and paws on deck to pitch in.

Mmm, maybe not all paws. I don’t know if you’ve noticed, but some of our shop dogs are at work more than others. And some… well, some just aren’t suited to the professional life at all. How so? Let me explain:

Most days, you can find Opie, our canine manager, on the job. He specializes in friendly greetings and has recently learned to “pound it.”

Bear works a lot, especially in the afternoons. And by “work,” we mean nap, lean on people silently, and make cute faces like this. Good job, Bear.

Everyone loves Belle, but the fact is, it’s hard for the shop people to answer the phone and take book orders with a 30-pound pooch in their laps. So she just comes in occasionally.
Sam is the sister of shop dog Gracie, but you'll almost never see Sam in the store. Snuggling is fun, but sometimes our staff need their hands free to pull books from shelves, arrange chairs for readings, or wrap gifts.

Strider is good at sharing, which, in theory, would make him a great attendant of the children’s section. Turns out though, not all customers want us to feed their kids dog food.

Brodie likes to enjoy books in the bathroom, which is just fine and we’re not judging, but we like to keep our restrooms open for customers.

Woodstock loves nothing so much as a good shredding session. Until we can teach him the difference between chew toys and shipping boxes, he's on probation from helping pack up online orders in the mail room. Rest assured, your holiday orders will not have teeth marks in them.

Come in and see us soon! (Those of us who are working, that is.) We can follow our noses to our shop people’s favorite reads and the newest releases from our visiting authors. And if you take your books with a side of furry companionship, we stand ready to snuggle.
