Attention, book-lovers: Our holiday approaches! This Saturday, April 30, marks Independent Bookstore Day. We know, we know . . .  every day is indie bookstore day, right? Yes. But on this occasion, we’ve got a few extra-special things going on, with exclusive merchandise available just for the day, just in the store.

Take a look at the wonderful items created by collaborating authors and illustrators this year:

The Neil Gaiman Coloring Book includes 20 pieces of black-and-white art by Chris Riddell and quotes from Neil Gaiman from the pages of Coraline, The Graveyard Book, and Fortunately, the Milk.
“Think before you speak. Read before you think.” We couldn’t say it better than Fran Lebowitz. Laser-cut stencil on red oak board.
Side A of this record features “X is For…,” an original alphabet song by Carolyn Pennypacker-Riggs of Bouquet. Side B is a reading of the “X” chapter from the awesome alphabet book for people of all ages, Rad American Women A-Z — featuring the voices of Angela Davis, Rebecca Solnit, Charlene Yi, and many more women who are, indeed, quite rad.
A special edition of the new novel by two-time Newbery Award winner Kate DiCamillo. SIGNED, numbered, and packed with a personal letter from DiCamillo about the joys of books and bookstores.
One tea towel reads, “I would be most content if my children grew up to be the kind of people who think decorating consists mostly of building enough bookshelves. – Anna Quindlen.” The other reads, “A half-read book is a half-finished love affair. – David Mitchell.” 100% cotton flour-sack towels, set of two.
This limited-edition print was created especially for Independent Bookstore Day by Tad Hills, bestselling creator of the Duck & Goose books. Only 400 giclée prints were made; all are signed and numbered.
100% cotton canvas zippered pouch featuring portraits of real shop cats. Our shop dogs have no comment.
This is only the second time in Curious George’s 75 years that he has worn a branded T-shirt! The front reads: READ WITH ME. The back features the Independent Bookstore Day logo.
Step-by-step drawing instructions for kids 6-12 who want to draw characters like Mo Willem’s Pigeon, Raina from Smile and Sisters, Curious George, Fly Guy, and many more.
This gallery-quality print, SIGNED by Anthony Bourdain, offers an illustrated guide to making the perfect burger.
And finally, one we’re especially excited about: The Care & Feeding of an Independent Bookstore, a set of three essays about the origin and growth of our bookstore, our staff, and our sometimes-naughty / sometimes-nice shop dogs. This saddle stitched paper booklet will be the first in a new Independent Bookstore Day series called “A $6 Story,” and every copy is SIGNED.

We’ll be open 10 a.m.-8 p.m. on Saturday, but we do expect some of this stuff to go fast. If you’ve got your heart set on something, you may want to come on the early side. These items cannot be reserved or pre-ordered, and they are only available in the physical store (not online). Some items may also have limits per customer; we appreciate your understanding on that.

We’ll also have snacks, drinks, a shop dog kissing booth (slurp), the Parnassus on Wheels bookmobile, and all sorts of general merriment — not to mention, as always, all the latest and greatest reads.

A housekeeping note: As you probably know, our expansion is underway, as we convert the empty space next door into part of our new-and-improved store. From Sunday, May 1, through Wednesday, May 4, our shop doors will be closed (to protect customers from falling walls), but our bookmobile will be right outside in the parking lot to serve your reading needs!
